History of Media technologies

All year we have been working on journalism and how we consume news and/or present it to the world. As we move away from print mediums and move into mass media that involve more than just reading, I want us to consider the advances and how we have changed because of the many ways we are now able to get our news...

I want each of you in your groups to visit the following website:

http://cedmagic.com/history - this is a visual timeline of advances made through the 1950s... select 3 of the inventions and discuss how they have changed history. comment on this post.

then go to:

http://ezinearticles.com/?History-of-the-Media,-Radio,-and-Television&id=15556

Read the article about the history of media and then comment on what you think has made the greatest impact. How have these advances changed the way we get and consume news? How have our expectations changed?

If you can't finish this assignment in class, please finish it for Monday.

The greatest impact was television because everyone basically has one and we could actually see what events that have happen.

These advances changed the way we get and consume news because we have many different ways to hear about news.

Our expectations changed because everyone wants something better so when you give someone like an item back in the day they think its weird because it something different that there not used to.

I believe that the three mosting impacting inventions in media history was the
-the first ever televsion
-the first working computer
- and the first recording device that is able to record our favorite shows.

I believe these inventions left the most impact is because the all of these inventions made getting news easier. The television made recieving news easier. The computer just made life more easier and the recording device made being able to watch your favorite shows at a different time easier as well.

News has chaaged alot over the years and i think its because our demand for easier and faster news has grown as more people want more news. Our expectations have changed because as lives have gotten more complex, the need to know what is going on in the world has grow into a nessesity.

three things that helped change history
1) 1877: edison cylinder phonograph
this was the begining of all video tec. and helped improve (at the time) the media.
2) 1881: earliest identified flat disc record
this is what made modern day music listenable with out having to be in a consert! yaa
3) 1926: baird mechanical television
the very start of one of the most popular entertainment systems. it will be used for not only that but also news and more

i believe that the creation of the media was the most important thing we have ever created because if it wasn't for the soon to be wide demand for the media we would have not gone on inventing the things we now have.

1) Video disc Jukebox because it was almost the start of the invention of television. It was a way to get news beside for the radio.

2) Atanasoff berry electionic digital computer because you could get more research than reading a book.

3) The first computer mouse is demonstrated because it was a way to control the computer to get research.

3 INVENTIONS:

1972: Magnavox Odyssey - The First Home Video Game System:

I think this invention changed history because it gave a form of entertainment to children and occupied them. It has advanced over the years and is a pretty big selling product. Now, in 2009, this invention has led to greater inventions and home gaming systems such as XBOX, PlayStation 1, 2 & 3, and Nintendo DS, etc.

1885: Tainter Graphophone:

I think this invention played a big part in history because since it was invented, many people enjoyed it and now, it has advanced to CDS, Walkmans and iPods. This invention is an even larger selling product than video game systems and is widely enjoyed by all ages.

2002: Apple iMac Pedestal Computer:

This invention most definitely impacted history because it is where we get a lot of our information from such as news and almost everyone owns a computer of some sort. The compute is a very important invention and allows society to do the things we weren't capable of in the past.

ARTICLE:
I think that the radio has had the biggest impact. I think it has had the greatest impact because it was once used only for military purposes, but now it is used for news and music entertainment.

I chose the Macintosh Color Classic - The Last Classic Mac because i think it has an impact on me. Computers have changed so much over the year and when you look back at it now, you see how far it's come. The first computer gave inventors ideas on how to improve it. Computers also have an impact on society by helping people and they help by letting us view certain things and find information. In my opinion, I think the thing that encouraged the invention of the computer was the typewriter. Using a typewriter, there was no delete button or spell check.

I chose Edison's Cylinder Phonograph. It was a record player. Phonographs were the most common device for playing recorded sound from the 1870s through the 1980s. How to play music has changed a lot. Now we have radios, iPods, c.d.'s and stereo systems.

I chose a RCA Black & White Television that was converted to color. It was called the COL-R-TEL 630TCS Color Converter and was attached to and RCA television. It was a motorized spinning tricolor disc on the back of a TV. It was used to transform black and white into color. In that system, was a head-mounted 3-D Imager with a spinning tricolor wheel. It was used to watch the screen in 3D and color.

1993: Macintosh Color Classic - The Last Classic Mac
>>In my opinion I find this one to be the most impact to me. I say this because the computer evolved over time and because of the fist one that was what encouraged inventors to make it better. Due to the inventors that made it better it has become a major part of american life. It allow us to view news, music, videos, blogs and profiles etc. Its is also what is allowing me to do this assignment right now.

1926: Baird Mechanical Television
>>This invention has changed history because just like the computer other inventors began to think how they can improve this invention. They wanted to make it better and fix it up, they wanted to make it with color and thinner, much like they are today. Over time the inventors improved it more and more.

1972: Cartrivision - The First VCR with Prerecorded Tapes
>>The vcr with and perrecorded has come a long way since it was invented. Now we can record shows on television and dvd players

>>>i think they are all a great impact and through many of these inventions we can go online and get news on the world today. The tech. has changed over time due to the consumers demands.

Part 1:
* 1881: Earliest Identified Flat Disc Record
- I think that this invention changed history because it was the very first Flat Disc Record that was invented, and then from that, more were being created and they got more ideas and started making it more advanced.

* 1956: IBM 305 RAMAC Computer with Disk Drive
- This invention definitely changed history because it was the very first computer that included a disk drive.

* 1956: Ampex VRX-1000 - The First Commercial Videotape Recorder
- This invention changed history it was the first video tape recorded that was on sale and for anyone to buy to record video.

Part 2:
I think the thing that made the biggest impact was the IBM computer that included a disk drive because that was one the advancements that was made and now they make even more better ones. Our expectation's have become more spoiled and more greatly viewed because we already have a lot of types to chose from.

To me, the greatest impact was the television because they have advanced in many ways. If you compare the TV's today to the ones in the early days, you see pretty big differences. For example, the TV's back then didn't have color, they were big, they didn't have many channels and it took longer for something to be o TV. The TV's today are in high definition, they can come with over 1000 channels, they are in color and news, for instant, takes about 5-45 minutes to be transfered on television.

three inventions that have changed history:

1926: Baird Mechanical Television* this hand wheeled tv was invented by John Baird. even though he was from the United Kingdom it lead to advanced telivision inventions in the Us which helped people see news in a different way rather than the radio, like for example the nixon-Kennedy debate showed viewers that Nixon was a nervous person by seeing it visually rather than just hearing it.

1950: Simon Electromechanical Personal Computer*this was the first attempt at a computer and paved the way for future advanced computers where many people get news through online newspapers.

1963: First Consumer-only Video Tape Recorder* this was the first video recorder that enabled people to see events that actually happened without having to set up a whole camera system, it was somewhat portable.

these advances changed the way we get and consumed news by showing people other ways of seeing it like videos and telivision and radio (earlier) rather than just print, because sound and videos impact peoples in take on news and how they interpret it like the kennedy nixonm debates for example

1.Tainter Gramphone- This changed history because it was one of the first machine that was built to record sound, and was better than the pervious tape recorder it taped longer it went up to 10 min. Opposed to the other one that recorded up to two or three mins. the sound was also clearer.
2.Berlin Gramphone- This changed history, although it was a tape recorderer like the Tainter Gramphone this one is a little more advanced because it used master processing, which fixed the grove weakness promblem that the Tainter Gramphone had.
3.Earliest Identified Flat Disc- This was of course the first record identified. What makes this pretty special is This was around even before there was a machine that could play it. The machines they tested it on couldnt play it.

Part 1:
>1922: RCA Superheterodyne Radiola
>1926: Baird Mechanical Television
> 2002: Apple iMac Pedestal Computer

I feel that these three inventions have changed the way people view news because there is audio, visual, and both (computer, looking up news). With the radio people can hear news anywhere they are. With the television people can see the reporter, reporting the news. There are also pictures and/or videos to go along with a story. On the computer a person can look up a certain story from anytime period and get a lot of information on it.

Part 2:
I think the greatest impact so far has been the radio. With the radio people are able to hear the news anytime, all the time. By people knowing what is going on in the world it makes life easier, and makes people smarter. Our expectations have changed because if we miss something on the news we can just look it up online. 100 years ago if you missed something you would have to ask around for what happened. Now you can just go on the computer and learn all you need to learn.

1972: Magnavox Odyssey - The First Home Video Game System:
I think this invention changed history because it has advanced over the years and is so popular. So many people play video games, and this invention led to the more modern game systems such as the PS3 and Nintendo Wii.

1955: RCA Black & White Television Converted to Color
This has changed so much over time, because we had gone from black and white, to color, to HD and now to Blu Ray. All of these advancements were made because of the color TV. It started the desire to perfect TV, and make the picture as perfect as it can be.

1941: VideoDisc Jukebox
This has really changed so much over the years. What started out being CDs of about 12 songs went to tiny iPods holding thousands of songs. It's really incredible how something that seemed so amazing back then is like ancient 70 years later.

--I think that the radio has had the biggest impact because it was once used only for military purposes, but now it is used for news, music, and entertainment. Now,we can get traffic updates on one radio station, music on another, and just regular news on another.

The three most important and impacting inventions in media history are the...
-First Commercial Color TV (RCA)
-RCA's First Postwar Designed Television(1946)
- RCA SelectaVision MagTape Prototype VCR(1973)

The RCA color TV gave color light to the Black and White world of Television. Lead the way to what TV's are now. The Postwar Television gave the US perspectives of the world at a quicker rate.
The VCR was one of the first good recording devices of its time.

News has changed a considerable amount over the years and I think its because our demand for easier and faster news has grown as more people want more news. Also the different sides a person has to the subject has changed the way news is. Our expectations have changed because as lives have gotten more complex, the need to know what is going on in the world has grow into a necessity.

1926: Baird Mechanical Television
This invention was important because it was pretty much the first version of the television. Without this, we might not have ever come to invent the television we know today. The television today is imprtant because it is some people's main source of information (News.). The television illustrates the events that people need to know.

1946: The Eniac Computer is Unveiled
This invention changed history because it helped calculate things that needed to be known to create the hydrogen bomb, which was a very big part of American history. It was also the very beginning of computers. Computers are also a source of information.

1954: RCA's First Commercial Color TV
This was the first color T.V that was available to the public and even though at first people really did not want it, it became popular in the mid 1960's. This was mainly because that was when they started creating color programs.

I think that the radio was a very big step. I think that this was very important because it was one of the first times people were able to access new through audio and that can be very convenient. I think our expectations have changed because we no longer rely on newspapers and we expect the radio to be able to deliver our news.

Three inventions that changed history:

1956: Computer with Disk Drive
This was the first computer with a disk drive and it can store more data without taking up too much space.

1982: Sony CDP-101
This was the first CD player and it lead to further advancements, such as, the CD-R which only allows one-time recording. The CD-R/W which is rewritable also appeared.

1999: Personal Video Recorders from ReplayTV and TiVo are introduced
The Instant Replay Deck in 1967 could only record 30 seconds of videos, while The ReplayTV and TiVo could record 14 hours of video. The ReplayTV and TiVo can also pause and rewind live TV.

I think the radio has made the greatest impact. It makes communication more easier. We can use radios to listen to music and news. There are many radio stations across the U.S. The radios are also important for the police and military.

1) Invention of First Home Computer by IBM (1983) - This was a very important event because it was the beginning of many follow-up inventions, such as laptops and desktops. It has impacted our life by making things such as schoolwork simple, and much more. In the 21st century, the public is computer-dependant and would experience difficulties without computers.

2) Edison Cylinder Photograph (1877) - I think that this was an important invntion in history because it was the beginning of the creation of photographs, videos, etc. for the media which were used to educate and entertain people.

3) The Firtst Home Game System (1972) - This was an important invention because it was the beginning of many inventions of video games, which had many effects on the public, such as entertainment, psychological effects, and occupation.

Media has changed a lot over the past century because it involves of a lot of technology use, making news simple for people.

many people can log onto a website and read about events that have occured several hours before they were being written about. Many people expect everything to be simple, and fast, including their news and entertainment

these three inventions really helped boost up media technology because the t.v as t thing that actually got to show the viewers what the news was. The edison cylinder phonographbecause thats what helped improve media. And the iMac because it really brought up technology in cmputer systems.

One invention that has changed history was when the 2002 Apple re-designed their CRT-based iMac computer. I think this really changed history, because it has a whole bunch of upgraded features compared to the first computer. With it's mounted screen on a pedestal with a chrome arm permitting the display to be violated in different ways. Giving it a universal and futuristic vibe. Another invention that I think changed history is the 1983 Coleco Adam Computer with Daisy Wheel Printer. i feel this way, because it's almost like an up-grade to the type writer. But it gets typed on the attached to the monitor, and sent to the printer all at once like a computer. The last object I think changed history was the 1983 Radio-Shack Model 100 Notebook Computer. It was the first portable computer, that must have caught peoples attention!

We get and consume news faster, and easier to understand by television(1945), it was absolutely the greatest impact of man-kind. We depend on it a lot, almost as much as the computers. Once a breaking news story has occurred, we expect it to come & inform us right away.

Part 1:

* 1922: RCA Superheterodyne Radiola
* 1926: Baird Mechanical Television
* 2002: Apple iMac Pedestal Computer

I feel that these three inventions have changed the how many people watch news. I feel this way because there are so many more ways to get your news today including audio, visual, and the computer. On the radio people can hear news anywhere they are, especially while driving to or from work if you missed it. With the television people can see the reporter, reporting the news. Along with seeing the reporters you see the scene of a crime or and interview and can sense the mood of the story. On the computer a person can look up a certain story from anytime period and get a lot of information on it. They could also go to another website and compare that same story to a new article and learn more about that one topic.

Part 2:
I think the greatest impact so far has been the computer. I feel this way because on the computer you can listen to the radio such as NPR, you can watch the news on Good Morning America and you can read articles on the New York Times website. If we didn't have a computer that was advanced as they are today, getting news would be harder and i would not be able to type up my post right now.
